Tennis has strong showing at MACJC Tournament

TUPELO---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College came very close to advancing both the men’s and women’s squads to next week’s Region 23 Tournament in Meridian.

The men’s team finished third at the MACJC Tournament behind Itawamba and second-place Jones while the Gulf Coast women tied for third with Co-Lin but lost a tiebreaker. With the top three teams advancing to the Region 23 event, the men move on while the Lady Bulldogs season comes to an end.

In Saturday’s championship action, Lachlan Puyol of Gulf Coast took down Nick Williams of Jones 7-6 (6-4), 6-4 to claim the No. 2 men’s MACJC singles title while MGCCC’S Nick Georgian dispatched Luke Wilson of Itawamba 7-6 (6-5), 6-2 for the No. 4 MACJC men’s singles crown.

MGCCC’S Suzy Bowman played hard but couldn’t get past Stephanie Smith of Jones, falling 6-3, 2-6, 0-6 in the women’s No. 2 singles championship.

The next goal for the Bulldog men will be a top three finish at the Region 23 Tournament Apr. 25-26 which would send the squad to the NJCAA Tournament May 14-18 in Plano, TX.
