MGCCC’S Gates, Miles, Slaton earn post-season honors
Pitcher Jarred Gates, third baseman Daniel Miles, and left fielder Ben Slaton were named to the MACJC’S All-First Team squad and to the Region 23 All-First Team lineup.
Gates, a freshman from Harrison Central, is ranked among the NJCAA’S top 20 pitchers thanks to a 9-3 record, 1.54 ERA, and 81 strikeouts. In an elimination game against Jones May 11, Gates went eight innings and allowed only three hits in his team’s 9-0 shutout.
Miles, a sophomore from Pascagoula, is batting .400 with six homeruns and 29 RBI. In six post-season games, Miles is hitting .462 with a homer and 7 RBI.
Slaton, a sophomore from Ocean Springs, has smacked 14 homeruns in 2012, which ranks him fourth among the NJCAA’S home run leaders. He’s also batting .358 with 51 RBI in 2012.
Meanwhile Bulldog second baseman Michael Paul, pitcher Tyler Bray, and reliever Daniel Wineski were all named to the All-MACJC Second Team squad. Paul, a sophomore from Long Beach, is batting .377 with six HR and 30 RBI. Bray, a sophomore from Vancleave, is 8-4 with a 2.00 ERA. Wineski, a sophomore from Ocean Springs, is 4-0 with a 1.68 ERA and eight saves.
Gulf Coast is coming of a 2-2 run at last week’s MACJC Tournament, which includes a 6-5 loss to Hinds in the tournament’s Championship Game.
“I’m extremely proud of the way the guys played, but most importantly, how they fought and competed,” said Gulf Coast head baseball coach Gary Rath. “The last three weeks have been a grind, so to go to the tournament and fight their way to the title game is a reflection on what we are as a team.”
The Bulldogs (29-190 take the host team and No. 1 ranked LSU-Eunice Thursday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the Region 23 event.
