#8 MGCCC mauls Pearl River 34-0

PERKINSTON---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has been looking for a complete game all season.

The Bulldogs got it, and then some in a 34-0 whitewashing of archrival Pearl River in "whiteout" night at A.L. May Memorial Stadium.

"We played well in all three phases tonight," said Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell, who's now 7-4 all-time against the Wildcats. "It was a complete victory."

The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1) got 249 yards rushing, two touchdown passes from quarterback Clint Hatten, two field goals from kicker Stephen Brauchle, and a shutout from the defense which induced five turnovers from Pearl River quarterback Dylan Favre.

Gulf Coast has now won six out if it's last seven encounters with the Wildcats (2-4, 1-2).

"We've got a lot of weapons on offense and our offensive line played well," Campbell said. "Our defense hasn't allowed a point in seven out of the last eight quarters we've played. They're not the biggest guys out there, but they play extremely hard."

After a Brauchle 35-yard field goal got Gulf Coast on the board 3-0, Clint Hatten and D'haquille Williams hooked up on a 16-yard TD pass making it 10-0 Bulldogs with 2:38 to go in the first quarter. Another Brauchle field goal upped the advantage to 13-0 in the second quarter. Then a minute later, Brandon Keel intercepted a Favre pass and took it 37 yards for a score and a 20-0 Bulldog lead at halftime.

An Eli Hughes 11-yard TD run and a Hatten TD pass to Tyrone Williams were more than enough to put the game away for Gulf Coast in the second half.

In addition to the five turnovers, the Bulldog defense sacked Favre six times and held the high-powered Wildcat offense to 165 total yards.

The 34-0 shutout was the first against the Wildcats since 1974 when Gulf Coast blanked Pearl River 21-0.

"Anytime you throw a shut out against a team like, it's special," Campbell added.

Gulf Coast travels to Southwest Oct. 13 for the first of two straight road games. Bulldog fans can listen to all the action on 103.1 FM WOSM. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in Summit.
