MGCCC tennis looks to re-gain championship form in 2010

  • At one point last season, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis coach Gary Bourgeois was literally pulling in people off the street to play on his team. Gulf Coast featured 11 new players in 2009, and most of those had limited playing experience. Despite the lack of competitive court time, the men’s team finished sixth at the MACJC State Tournament while the women took fourth and narrowly missed a shot at the Region 23 Tournament.

  • Tennis ends season at MACJC

    The goal for this year’s Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team was to get better as the season evolved and perhaps peak during the post-season.

    While the men’s and women’s teams did improve during 2009, the men finished sixth and the women came in fourth at the MACJC State Tournament Apr. 16-18 in Hattiesburg. With the top three teams in each category advancing to the Region 23 Tournament, which means the 2009 season has come to an end for Gulf Coast.

  • Netters split at Pearl River

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College men’s tennis team defeated Pearl River 5-4 while the women’s team lost 5-4 to the Lady Wildcats Tuesday in the last regular season match of the 2009 season.

    Landon Williams, Glyn Bowman and Josh Lang, all won singles matches, while Williams/Bowman and Lang/Lyn Jacobson took doubles victories. With the victory, the men completed a season sweep of the archrival Wildcats.

  • Tennis teams hoping to peak soon

    Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s tennis teams don’t have flattering win-loss records. But that hasn’t stopped both the men’s and women’s teams from making a post-season push. Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois is hoping both teams can finish in the top three at the Region 23 Tournament later this month, which would assure each squad a chance to play at the NJCAA Nationals in Arizona next month.

    On Apr. 4, Gulf Coast hosted Meridian and avoided a complete shutout thanks to a win by Victoria Hagel in her women’s singles match.
