Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College began the week taking on some of the top teams in the country and ended the week defeating Holmes on the road in Goodman.
Gulf Coast took part in the Central Alabama Community College tournament Mar. 5-7 and competed against Central AL., Gadsden St., Snead St., Marion Military Institute, and Abram Baldwin College (Ga.). The women’s team was able to defeat Central Al. 5-4 behind wins from Victoria Hagel, Morgan Rabby, Katherine Blair and Katy King.
“I knew going in that we were going to have very tough matches playing ABAC, Gadsden St, Snead St, Central Ala., and Marion Institute,” said Gary Bourgeois, Gulf Coast tennis coach. “The idea is play tough matches in order to get ready for the rest of the schedule and the state championship.”
On Mar. 11, the men’s squad defeated Holmes 6-3 behind singles victories by Kris Baglais, Alex Drake, Travis Ladner and Taylor Thrash. The teams of Baglais/Drake and Ladner/Tyler Eggers also earned doubles victories.
The women’s team was paced by straight set singles wins by Ruta Grindvalde, Victoria Hagel and Brittany Freeman. Grindvalde teamed with Morgan Rabby to earn a doubles win.
Gulf Coast goes back on the road to take on Faulkner St. (Ala.) Mar. 18 and Meridian Mar. 20.
