MGCCC tennis ends season at MACJC State Tournament
April 20, 2009

Victoria Hagel was 12-1 during the 2009 regular season.
The goal for this year’s Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team was to get better as the season evolved and perhaps peak during the post-season.
While the men’s and women’s teams did improve during 2009, the men finished sixth and the women came in fourth at the MACJC State Tournament Apr. 16-18 in Hattiesburg. With the top three teams in each category advancing to the Region 23 Tournament, which means the 2009 season has come to an end for Gulf Coast.
In 2009, head coach Gary Bourgeois had only two men’s players’ return from last year’s team, while the women’s team featured six incoming freshmen.
At the state event, Victoria Hagel reached the No. 4 women’s singles finals but was defeated by Mary Carole Kiewit of Jones in 3 sets, while Charmayne Purvis reached the No. 6 women’s finals but lost to Rebecca Rogers of Jones.
This season, Hagel chalked up a regular season singles match record of 12-1, while Hagel and Purvis went 10-2 in regular season doubles matches. Men’s player Landon Williams also won six of his 11 singles matches during 2009.
