MGCCC tennis teams hoping to peak soon

April 8, 2009

Landon Williams has won his last two singles matches.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s tennis teams don’t have flattering win-loss records. But that hasn’t stopped both the men’s and women’s teams from making a post-season push. Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois is hoping both teams can finish in the top three at the Region 23 Tournament later this month, which would assure each squad a chance to play at the NJCAA Nationals in Arizona next month.

On Apr. 4, Gulf Coast hosted Meridian and avoided a complete shutout thanks to a win by Victoria Hagel in her women’s singles match.

Victoria Hagel has won four singles matches in a row.

The women’s team also scored three match victories at Hinds Apr. 5, with Hagel again winning a singles along with Charmayne Purvis. The Hagel/Purvis duo also teamed to win their doubles match.

At Jones Apr. 6, Landon Williams earned a men’s singles victory and also teamed with Glyn Bowman to win a doubles match. Hagel made it three singles wins in a row and once again teamed with Purvis to take a doubles match.

Against East Central Apr. 7, Williams took another singles match, as did Bowman, Lin Jacobson, and Josh Lang. The Lady Bulldogs took four matches against east Central as Hagel, Ashley Field and Megan Terrell were all singles winners and Hagel/Purvis and Field /Kristy Southerland won doubles matches.

Gulf Coast has two more matches before the MACJC State tennis Tournament Apr. 16-18 in Hattiesburg.
