PERKINSTON — No. 18 Mississippi Gulf Coast let a split with No. 2 Pearl River slip through the fingertips Wednesday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Bulldogs rallied from an early three-run deficit in the nightcap to take a lead, but lost 11-8. Pearl River won the opener 11-6.
Gulf Coast is now 19-12 overall, 4-6 MACCC. Pearl River (27-7, 9-1) won the season series between the archrivals after Gulf Coast had won a non-conference game at Poplarville earlier in the season.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs battled back from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning. They scored a run in the bottom of the first on a passed ball, then got the third home run of the year by Layton Eder (So., Vancleave/Vancleave) in the second to make it 3-2.
After PRCC added a run in the fifth, Anthony Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) hit his eighth home run to tie it at 4. Tripp Lightsey (Fr., Lucedale/George County) doubled in two more runs for the first lead of the day.
The Wildcats tied it in the sixth, then scored four times in the seventh.
Garrett Gardner (Fr., Madison/Madison-Ridgeland Academy) hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season to make it 11-8, but the Bulldogs couldn't keep the comeback going. He finished the game with two hits and three RBI.
Lightsey also had two hits, and Jordan Davis (So., Neshoba/Neshoba Central) doubled twice.
Brady Saxton (Fr., Brandon/Northwest Rankin) went 4-for-4 with a double and a walk in the first game. Jordan Davis (So., Neshoba/Neshoba Central) had a two-run, two-out single in the fifth that got Gulf Coast within 3-2.
The Bulldogs scored three with two outs in the ninth but left two on base, making it 10 for the game.
Wade Barr (So., Collins/Seminary) allowed three runs in five innings of work as he stretches out from starting the year in the bullpen. He struck out four with one walk.
Bulldog pitchers walked 11 batters in the first game and 12 in the second.
After finishing up a three-doubleheader homestand, the Bulldogs hit the road for Saturday's trip to Senatobia. First pitch against Northwest Mississippi will be at 2 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://nwccrangers.com/watch.
