Shores, Cade sweep MACJC weekly honors
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast had a big weekend and the new week is off to a great start.
A day after the Bulldogs (10-0) moved up to No. 2 in the national rankings, Briana Shores and Kristen Cade swept the MACJC Player of the Week awards Tuesday.
Shores, a sophomore third baseman/catcher from Richland, tore up the Rush Invitational in Meridian, won Player of the Week by going 4-for-6 with two doubles each day. She drove in six runs total in a 14-2 win over Southeastern Illinois and a 4-2 win over Trinity Valley on Saturday, and four more in a 9-4 win over Parkland and a 5-1 win over No. 2 LSU Eunice. The last win helped propel the Bulldogs up the rankings.
Cade, a sophomore right-hander from Harrison Central, won Pitcher of the Week by dominating No. 2 LSU Eunice, helping Gulf Coast defeat the Bengals 5-1. She struck out 14 and didn't walk anyone, allowing just three hits. The day before, she pitched the final two innings in relief to pick up a save in a 4-2 win over Trinity Valley. She struck out four without a walk, allowing two hits.
