Cade, Travis sweep MACJC weekly awards

PERKINSTON — For the second time in three weeks, Mississippi Gulf Coast has swept the MACJC Players of the Week awards. Kristen Cade's four wins for the No. 2 Bulldogs earned her Pitcher of the Week, and Rakeya Travis' three home runs won her Player of the Week.

Cade, a sophomore from Harrison Central, picked up four wins and had a no-hitter against ranked teams last week for No. 2 Gulf Coast. She struck out nine and walked three in a 7-0 no-hitter over No. 16 LSU Eunice, then pitched the final five outs to cap off a 10-run comeback in a 12-11 victory in the second game.

Cade struck out 10 and walked two in a three-hit 3-0 shutout of No. 12 Itawamba, then won Game 2 with four innings of six-strikeout work in a 7-6 comeback win. She allowed her only two runs of the week in the final outing, only one earned. Cade had 27 strikeouts and six walks.

Travis, a freshman shortstop from Poplarville, batted .571 with three home runs and 11 RBI. She went 3-for-4 with a home run four RBI to help power a 10-run comeback in a 12-11 win over No. 16 LSU Eunice.

Against No. 12 Itawamba, she had a two-run homer in a 3-0 win in the first game and added two game-tying hits in a 7-6 comeback win in the nightcap. She extended her hit streak to nine games, including homers in the last three games

It's the second win of the season for both players, and the fifth overall for Gulf Coast. Cade and Travis are now eligible for NJCAA honors.
