Hunt will play D-I softball
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast first baseman Marsha' Hunt will continue her softball career at NCAA Division I Alcorn State, having signed a scholarship with the Braves.
"This year taught me a lot," said. "Coach (Eric) Neel taught me how to be stronger. He taught me to overcome everything I thought I couldn't do, especially in the weight room. He pushed me to be more than I thought I could be."
Hunt, a sophomore from Philadelphia, was batting .298 when the No. 2 Bulldogs' season ended after 14 games. She had three doubles and six RBI. As a freshman, Hunt batted .341 with nine doubles, a home run and 14 RBI.
"She's got great athleticism and can really hit in the middle of the lineup," Gulf Coast coach Eric Neel said. "She's one of the best defensive first basemen around. She's versatile, too. She can play a little third base, and can probably play some outfield."
Alcorn State plays in the SWAC, and former Gulf Coast shortstop Brittney Triplett has played there the last two seasons. Hunt and Triplett played travel ball together. The Braves are coached by Josef Rankin, who led the team to back-to-back SWAC East titles in 2017-18.
"Coach Rankin, he was really persistent," Hunt said. "He made the campus look very appealing. It was really good overall."
