Mitch Deaver, longtime PRCC SID, dies

The MACJC lost a leading light this week when Mitch Deaver, longtime sports information director at Pearl River Community College, passed away at age 62.

Deaver was an outstanding photographer and chronicler of all things PRCC sports. He was helpful to media members and his colleagues at other MACJC institutions, a true font of knowledge about his school and local sports scene.

"Mitch was great to work with when I was a reporter, and just as helpful when I became a fellow SID," Gulf Coast's Don Hammack said. "He had a great eye and skill for photography and was a generous person in all respects.

Deaver had previously worked in media, spending 20 years including time as general manager of weekly newspapers in Lamar County.

"We are saddened for the loss of Mitch Deaver. Mitch was a true leader within the MACJC," Gulf Coast Dean of Athletics Bert Pickard said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mitch's family as well as the Pearl River Community College family."

He is survived by a brother, Mac Deaver of Madison; three sisters, Michele Slade of Purvis, Melissa Bourn of Columbia and Melanie Hanlin of Jackson; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be announced through Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Purvis.
