Sims signs with UWA

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast shortstop Nick Sims will continue his collegiate career at NCAA Division II West Alabama after signing a scholarship with the Tigers.

Sims, a sophomore from New Hope, was batting a team-high .371 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI when the Gulf Coast season ended. He was slugging .657, third-best on the squad, and had hits in nine of the 10 games he played.

"Nick was a really good hitter from the time we got here," Gulf Coast coach Wes Thigpen said. "He was close to .500 in the fall and took off running when the spring started. He's a guy who's very versatile. He can play short, second or third. That's what's nice, because the bats always going to play.

Sims batted .302 with nine RBI as a freshman.

UWA is coached by Gary Rundles, who reached 1,000 college wins this season. He's been the coach for 20 seasons in Livingston, having compiled a 628-395 record there.
