Luke Reed twirled a gem in the first game of a doubleheader to help Mississippi Gulf Coast earn a split at Baton Rouge on Wednesday.
Reed (So., Louisville, Ky./Holy Cross) scattered six hits and struck out seven, allowing just two earned runs in a 9-3 win. The Bears won 11-5 in a nine-inning Game 2.
The Bulldogs took advantage of six walks and four Baton Rouge errors. They scored eight runs in the first three innings to cruise to the win. Alec Hardy (So., Wiggins/Stone) had a double among two hits, as did Kade Carpenter (Fr., Vancleave/Vancleave).
Preston Ratliff (So., Slidell, La./Northshore) hit a solo home run.
Brendan McCauley (So., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had two hits and three RBI in the nightcap. He also walked twice. Warren Garry (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had two hits, and Steve Sanderson had a pinch-hit RBI double.
Cade Crosby (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) walked six times in the doubleheader.
