All four of No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast's top-seeded singles players advanced to the MACJC/Region 23 Tournament semifinals by winning Thursday matches, and there's one top-seeded doubles team already in the finals.
"I think if we win out, we're in good shape," Gulf Coast coach Gary Bourgeois said. "We might be able to win it. We've got three matches with Jones tomorrow, which helps out a lot."
Tournament organizers squeezed in an extra round of doubles matches Thursday night trying to beat rain that's expected Friday. The top three teams advance to the NJCAA Tournament, plus any singles and doubles champions whose teams don't qualify.
Evan Chubb (So., Biloxi/St. Patrick) and Patrick Roth (Fr., Pascagoula/Resurrection) didn't drop a game in their No. 2 doubles quarterfinals match against Holmes, then beat Jones' Reese Duncan and Sergio Garcia, the four-seeds, 7-6, 6-1.
They also won a singles match each, with Chubb winning every game in a straight set win and Roth losing only six games.
Wesley Fontaine (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) bounced back from dropping the first set to beat Meridian's Jacob Wiggins 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 in No. 5 singles, and Anthony Schloegel (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) blanked Holmes' Benjamin Skelton at No. 6.
"We had our chances in all of the matches but just didn't come through," Bourgeois said. "We're still alive for the championship if we can knock some of these other teams out tomorrow. We still have the strength of our team that we've relied on all year."
Top-seeded Austin Vos (So., Perth Australia/Applecross) and Cole Wagoner (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) won their No. 2 doubles quarterfinals in straight sets, but fell to Jones in a three-set semifinal that saw them drop the final two in tiebreakers.
