Gulf Coast sweeps Alabama Southern

Mississippi Gulf Coast got a doubleheader sweep of Alabama Southern on Wednesday, one by blowout and one by the narrowest of margins.

The Bulldogs (8-4) crushed the Eagles 18-3 in the opener, then scored a seventh-inning run to win the second 5-4.

Slater McCarty had a huge day, going 5-for-6 with three doubles and three RBI.

"We played hard, better than we did last time out," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "I thought we played with a lot of energy. It was good for them to come back and play as well as they did after last time against Kaskaskia."

The Bulldogs erupted for 10 runs in the third and six more in the fourth.  They pounded out 15 hits in the five-inning contest.

Marcus Buckley and Justin Nussbaum had three hits and three RBI each. McCarty had two of his doubles and two RBI, and Brycen Burge had two hits and two RBI.

Chris Crosby (1-1) pitched four innings to pick up the win, striking out three and allowing one run on five hits and a walk.

"Crosby was really good. He had good stuff," Batts said. "He only went four innings because of the score of the game, but I thought his last two innings were as good as he's thrown all year."

Sam Taylor singled in the winning run in the top of the seventh, capping off a two-hit performance. McCarty had three more hits, including another double.

Brian Lane sparked the rally with a one-out double off the wall, later scoring his third run of the game.

Ian Goff also had two hits for Gulf Coast.

Brandon Kennedy got the final five outs for his second win. He has yet to allow a run in 7.2 innings over six appearances.

Alabama Southern fell to 5-11.
