MGCCC loses two at EMCC

Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped a pair of games Saturday at East Mississippi, missing out on a chance to clinch a playoff spot.

The Bulldogs lost 7-6 in Game 1 at Scooba, then fell 10-6 in the second. They are 23-19 overall, 13-13 in the MACJC.

Gulf Coast is scheduled to close the regular season Monday at Northeast. The Bulldogs are in a sixth-place tie with Itawamba (14-14), which has finished its schedule.

Gulf Coast fell behind 4-0 after two innings in the opener Saturday, but scored three in the third on RBI singles by Slater McCarty and Sam Taylor, plus a sacrifice fly by Michael Shubert.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth on an Ian Goff RBI double and Justin Nussbaum's single that made it 5-4. Taylor added another run with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

East Mississippi scored once in the sixth, but had another runner cut down at the plate. The Lions (15-27, 11-15) had another runner thrown out at the plate in the seventh, but got a two-run, two-out single to win it.

Brandon Kennedy (4-3) took the loss. Sam Taylor went 4-for-5, and Nussbaum had three hits.

Brian Lane had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, but went hitless in Game 2.

Ian Goff had three hits in the second game, including another double. Chase Rhodes had a triple.

Chris Crosby (2-3) took the loss.
