Gulf Coast splits at Delta

Mississippi Gulf Coast brought out the big bats in Saturday's opener at Mississippi Delta, but Game 2 was just the opposite.

The Bulldogs (17-13, 7-7 MACJC) crushed the Trojans 17-3 in Game 1, but got blanked 5-0 in the second.

"The first game we swung the bats well," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "They helped us with a lot of hit batters and walks, but we capitalize don it. We had some big hits with men in scoring position."

Gulf Coast is now in seventh in the MACJC, with the top eight at the end of the regular season advancing to the playoffs. The Bulldogs are on the road again Wednesday, traveling to Southwest. The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.

In the opener, Tyler Rachel (2-1) threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk.

Sam Taylor went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs. Brian Lane had three hits, including a double, and wound up with three RBI.

Batts said Delta did a better job pitching the Bulldogs away in the second game, keeping the Bulldogs off balance.

Dylan Mills-Derouen (2-2) took the loss for Gulf Coast.
