Gulf Coast blows out Delgado

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast scored the first 13 points against Delgado on Saturday and never looked back.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 9-1, led by as many as 32 in the second half, cruising to a 102-81 victory at the Weathers/Wentzell Center. Four Gulf Coast players finished in double digits.

"Our defense was solid. We rebounded the ball well. We scored well," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "Overall, we got a C-plus, B-minus."

Harvey Smart (6-3, 167, So., West Harrison/Gulfport) led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Zach Parker (6-2, 185, So., Biloxi/Biloxi) had 19, Davion Cole-Johnson (6-4, 210, So., Pike/Glen Ellyn, Ill.) 18 and Winston Morgan (5-10, 170, So., East Catholic/Manchester, Conn.) 10.

Gulf Coast had spent the previous five days trying to get back in shape after three weeks off for the holiday break.

"It was great to evaluate where we were with conditioning," Weathers said. "Less than a week ago, we wouldn't have been able to do that. We're closer to where we need to be than I thought we were."

Gulf Coast led 84-52 with 8:50 to play, and things got a little sloppy after that.

"When we got ahead, some of our guys got complacent and just started going through the motions," Weathers said. "I'm not about that. This is a game of habits. When you start doing things like they, you're creating bad habits. We wont be able to do that in any of the next 10, 11, 12 games we've got to play."

Delgado is 0-13.

The Bulldogs return to MACJC South Division play Thursday when they travel to Copiah-Lincoln. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. in Wesson.

The next home game is Jan. 17 when East Central visits.
