Bulldogs pick up another No. 1 plaudit
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast, which picked up another No. 1 honor last week, is back on the course in MACCC tournament play this week.
The Bulldogs are the top team in the National Collegiate Golf Rankings put out by Scoreboard on Oct. 16, pairing up with their co-No. 1 spot in the latest Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll. They're playing at the Hinds Invitational starting Monday at Castlewoods Country Club in Brandon.
"It's kind of different to be a conference event and not have a lot of knowledge on this course," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "A couple of guys have been here once or twice, so the practice round is gonna be pretty important. It's a typical Jack Nicklaus-designed course, so it has a lot of the features Grand Bear has."
Gulf Coast has four golfers in the top 20 of the individual rankings. Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College) is fifth, and Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) is ninth. Harlan Yerger (Fr., Oxford/Oxford) is 17th, and Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) 20th.
Those four will be joined by John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy), who is 38th. Garner Seymour (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) will be playing as an individual.
"It's exciting to see those guys get that recognition," Thornton said. "It's a very competitive conference, as the rankings show. You can't take anything for granted at any event. I'm very excited to have that level of competition among our conference opponents."
Meridian is second in the rankings, and East Central (eighth) and Jones (10th) are among the top-10 teams in the country. Three more MACCC schools are in the top 20: No. 14 Northeast Mississippi, No. 15 Copiah-Lincoln and No. 16 Hinds.
