MGCCC falls twice to No. 5 JCJC
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast lost a pair of games to No. 5 Jones County on Wednesday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
A nail-biter first game saw the Bobcats score twice in the ninth for a 4-2 win, and shaky pitching in the second game left the Bulldogs down 10 early in a 14-9 loss.
Gulf Coast falls to 25-11, 9-9 in the MACJC. The Bulldogs are in eighth in the conference facing three straight road doubleheaders. The top nine teams make the postseason.
Jones County improves to 29-7, 13-4.
Josh Lewis (So, Theodore/Mobile Ala.) pitched eight strong innings in the opener, allowing eight hits and one earned run. He left the game down 2-1, having allowed a sacrifice fly in the eighth to fall behind.
Alden Davis (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) crushed his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning to tie it back up, but JCJC scored twice in the ninth aided by two hit batsmen and two walks to win.
The Bobcats exploded for 10 runs in their first two at-bats in the nightcap, but the Bulldogs began clawing their way back into the game with a two-out, bases-loaded walk by Castor Lee (Fr, Gulfport/Gulfport) and a two-run single by Ike Williams (Fr, St. Martin/Biloxi) in the bottom of the second.
Davis provided another big two-out hit in the fourth with a bases-clearing double that made it 10-6. Colby Cagle (So, West Harrison/Lizana) hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the fifth to make it 10-7.
Jamarcus Lang (Fr, Hattiesburg/Hattiesburg), meanwhile, put up three straight zeroes on the board to help his team get back in the game.
Jones County got to him in the sixth, though, scoring three times to extend their lead.
Davis had an RBI double in the sixth to make it 13-8, and Cullan O'Shea (Fr, Mary G. Montgomery/Mobile, Ala.) hit his 10th homer to lead off the seventh for the final run.
Williams had four hits in the doubleheader, and Davis had three extra-base hits to drive in five runs.
Gulf Coast returns to action Saturday at Meridian. The first pitch is at 2 p.m.
