Parker named to NJCAA national team
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast right fielder Brandon Parker has been named to the NJCAA National Baseball team which will compete in the National Baseball Congress World Series next month.
Parker, who won the ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Division II Player of the Year award for a record-breaking freshman season, will join 24 other players in Wichita, Kan., for the tournament which runs Aug. 1-11.
He is one of five MACJC players on the team, which has players from 20 schools and all three divisions. It will be coached by Tyler's Doug Wren, who was an assistant for last year's squad went 3-1 to finish fourth among teams from around the world. The NJCAA was named Most Outstanding Offensive Team last year.
Parker batted .424 with a .500 on-base percentage and a .932 slugging percentage. He shattered the school record by hitting 24 home runs this year, five more than the previous record. He led the nation with 81 RBI as the Bulldogs went 36-16 and went to their first regional since 2012.
He was named to the NJCAA First-Team All-American squad as well as the All-Region 23 and All-MACJC teams. In addition to his outstanding performance on the field, Parker was named to the NJCAA All-Academic and the MACJC Academic All-State teams.
