PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast moved up a couple spots in the NJCAA Division II softball poll Monday, but the Bulldogs took a couple of shots to the chin from the No. 15 team in the Division I poll.
Pensacola State (11-2) beat the Bulldogs 8-0 in six innings, then 10-3 in the second game at Ross-Smith Field.
Gulf Coast got bumped up to No. 2 in the country after ripping off six straight wins to open MACCC play, but saw that winning streak snapped.
Rakeya Travis (So., Poplarville/Poplarville) had a double in the first game, one of only three hits by the Bulldogs. Four of PSCC's eight runs were unearned.
K.K. Agner (Fr., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) and Briana Shores (So., Richland/Richland) had back-to-back solo homers in the second inning of Game 2 to open the scoring.
Pensacola got five runs in the fifth, aided by a pair of errors. Shores' second consecutive solo home run made it 5-3 but Gulf Coast would get no closer.
The Bulldogs return to MACCC play Wednesday when archrival Pearl River visits Perk. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
