Travis wins MACCC Player of the Week
PERKINSTON — Rakeya Travis was a menace at the plate during the MACCC Tournament, and the rest of the state took notice.
She batted .636 in four games to help Mississippi Gulf Coast qualify for the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, and for that, she was named MACCC Player of the Week. The voting took place among conference sports information directors, and the league announced it Tuesday.
Travis, a sophomore shortstop from Poplarville, absolutely raked in Fulton. She went 7-for-11 with hits in all four games and three walks. Her big game was a 3-for-3 performance against No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln with a triple, a home run and five RBI.
She is now eligible for the NJCAA's weekly award. Travis is the third player to win a weekly conference award this season. Kristian Jones has won twice, and Emaleigh Coates won once.
The Bulldogs begin the region tourney Thursday in Eunice, La., when they play host LSU Eunice. The third game of the opening day is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
