Bulldogs split on Sophomore Day

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast celebrated Sophomore Day on Wednesday, and the group of eight Bulldogs playing their last games at Ross-Smith Field showed their defining characteristic.

Their resilience was on display as they bounced back from a disappointing 4-0 loss in the first game against East Central to win the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.

"They fought back well in that second game," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn. "Hats off to their pitcher in the first game, but Madison (Laiche) threw a good game, and we took advantage when they opened the door for us."

Gulf Coast is now 33-16 overall, 14-10 in the MACCC. The Bulldogs will need to win twice Saturday at Holmes and get some help to avoid the play-in game in the Region 23 Tournament. East Central is 24-16, 14-12.

Baleigh Tullos (Fr., Hurley/East Central) broke a 1-1 tie in the second with a two-out, two-run double. Brooklyn Mitchell (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) singled Tullos in, and Abby Lindsey (Fr., Decatur, Ala./Austin) doubled her in for a 5-1 lead.

Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Mitchell got plunked to force in another. Lindsey singled in another run for an 8-1 lead.

Irina Sanford (So., Lucedale/George County) ended the game with an RBI triple in the fifth.

Laiche (Fr., Luling, La./John Curtis) scattered six hits, striking out four without a walk. She allowed only a solo homer in the second.

Lindsey and Tullos had two hits and two RBI each.

In the first game, Gulf Coast managed only four hits. Lindsey and Thomson doubled.

Between games, the eight sophomores were recognized: Aleah Beaugez (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville), Olivia Falcon (So., St. Amant, La./St. Amant), Madison Laiche (Fr., Luling, La./John Curtis), AB Parrish (So., Corinth/Alcorn Central), Karley Rouse (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville), Irina Sanford (So., Lucedale/George County), Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) and Savannah Wilbanks (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central).
