MGCCC finishes 16th at national tournament
No. 16 Mississippi Gulf Coast won a pair of consolation brackets on the final day of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament on Friday in Plano, Texas. The Bulldogs finished in 16th in the team standings.
"We won two backdraw championships and finished as the top MACJC team out here," Bulldogs coach Gary Bourgeois said. "That's great, especially considering all the injuries we've had."
Sam Blackburn defeated Laredo's Matias Vargas 8-2 in the No. 2 singles finals, and Brennan O'Keefe and Noah Tippen downed Meridian's Sam Butler and Walt Herrington in the No. 2 doubles finals.
In the No. 6 singles consolation final, Brennan O'Keefe lost to Jacksonville's Jimmy McCormick 8-2
In the No. 1 doubles consolation finals, Sam Blackburn and Bryan Allen lost 9-7 to Hesston's Riley Kingsley and Keegan LeFevre.
In the No. 3 doubles consolation finals, Chris Diep and Brett Bowen lost 8-2 to Prairie State's Lutho Kempole and Mike Rivich. Diep and Bowen had won a semifinal match earlier in a walkover.
