MGCCC advances to 8 NJCAA quarterfinals
Mississippi Gulf Coast pushed its way into eight quarterfinals Tuesday on the second day of the NJCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas.
"Everybody did what they needed to do," Bulldogs coach Sam Blackburn said. "We had some tough matches throughout the day, but I think that's good for us. It can help us really get going in the tournament. It's only getting tougher from here on, and the guys got things rolling in a really good direction today as far as their intensity. We're striking the ball pretty clean and smooth, so I think as time goes on, we'll continue to get better."
It was a long day at the Collin College Tennis Facility, with Gulf Coast closing out their day after 10 p.m.
Angel Hernandez (Fr., Puebla, Mexico/UPAEP), Jan Bako (Fr., Ostrava, Czech Republic/Hladnov) and Warren Hudson (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) made quick work of their singles matches. Ryland Buford (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) and Nick Dulaney (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) also won in straight sets.
Santiago Enriquez (Fr., Encarnacion, Paraguay/CEUCE) and Taylor Cook (Fr., Olive Branch/Lewisburg) dropped only one game in their No. 3 doubles match, joining the other two Gulf Coast duos in the quarters.
Singles action starts Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., with the doubles scheduled for late afternoon.
