Owensby, Smith named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Jayden Owensby and McKenzie Smith have been named Bulldogs of the Week for April 23-29.

Owensby, a freshman from Hernando, tied for the lead after 36 holes at the Lou Hart Invitational in Meridian, which was won by Gulf Coast. Owensby lost on the second playoff hole, but earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for the third time this year.

Smith, a freshman pitcher from St. Amant, La., beat No. 18 Northwest Mississippi with an eight-inning five-hitter. She struck out five and walked just one in a 6-4 win.

Also nominated:

Jordan Davis, a sophomore outfielder from Neshoba, batted .500 with two doubles and two RBI.

Natalie Jones, a sophomore third baseman/catcher from Lucedale, batted .357 with a double and three RBI last week.

Brennan McGlothin, a freshman from French Camp, stepped up with injuries knocking out two of the top four players for No. 13 Gulf Coast, winning all four of his matches. He teamed with Angel Hernandez to get two points at No. 1 doubles and picked up a pair of straight-set victories at No. 4 singles.

James Vines, a sophomore right-hander from Clinton, La., beat Northwest Mississippi 12-0 with a two-hitter. He struck out five and walked one.

Katelyn Walker, a freshman from Sumrall, won all four of her matches during a 2-0 week for No. 15 Gulf Coast. She teamed with Meridith Matthews to claim two No. 3 doubles victories in addition to a pair of No. 5 singles points.
