No. 1 Gulf Coast tees it back up Monday
PERKINSTON — No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast will hit their first competitive drives of the spring Monday on a superb course.
The Bulldogs open the semester's schedule at The Lakewood Club in Fairhope, Ala. The course hosted the USGA Senior Women's Amateur in September.
"Any course that's hosting USGA events is going to be top-notch," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "The greens were really fast during our practice round. The course is beautiful, and we look forward to getting out there."
The two-day, 36-hole event will feature 13 teams, and it's a field featuring seven teams ranked in the top 20 of the Golfstat rankings. Gulf Coast is ranked first in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll and second in Golfstat.
Central Alabama is ranked second in the Golfstat Division I rankings and fourth in the coaches poll, with Eastern Florida State fifth and seventh in those polls, respectively.
Three other top-20 teams from Division I are in the field: host Coastal Alabama-South, Wallace State and Calhoun. Northeast Mississippi, another MACCC rival, is 15th in the Division II rankings.
"I think we're playing really well," Thornton said. "The guys came back after Christmas and put in some really hard work. We're very excited to get back on the golf course tomorrow and see what we need to work on. We're looking forward to getting into the season."
