No. 5 Gulf Coast opens MACCC action
PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast tees off MACCC play this weekend with the first conference tournament.
The Bulldogs travel to Raymond to play in the Hinds Fall Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event will be played at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. They won the event last year by nine shots over Northeast Mississippi.
Gulf Coast is coming off a spectacular debut in the Derrall Foreman Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Cleveland, Miss. The Bulldogs finished third in a field littered with NCAA Division II competition, behind NJCAA Division I power Central Alabama and host Delta State.
Alessio Graziani (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa/Beaulieu College) led start to finish, shooting 21-under in the 54-hole event to claim medalist by a shot. That was nine shots better than the previous Gulf Coast record for three rounds. The Bulldogs set a school record by shooting 16 shots better than any other 54-hole event.
New Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton will send out the same five golfers at Raymond. David Beard (Fr., Madison/Madison Central), Reeves Johnson (So., Madison/Germantown), Matt Wilkinson (So., Madison/Madison Central) and Ethan Trouth (So., Sutton Coldfield, England/The Streetly Academy) will round out the squad.
