Bulldogs face Texas team this weekend

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast has spent its midseason break from MACJC South play trying to gauge where it stands beyond the division.

The Bulldogs (8-1) finished off a perfect September by beating North No. 1 Hinds 4-0 and an out-of-state Andrew College 4-1. They'll face Jacksonville College (3-4-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the new MGCCC Soccer Complex.

"They've had a better year than they had the last year," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "They've got three wins. They tied San Jac. They're right in the mix over there, and Texas is tough."

That's the same San Jacinto team that handed the Bulldogs their only loss of the season. Gulf Coast lost 5-3 in its second game of the season.

Handy put his squad through a tough week of training ahead to get ready for Saturday, and beyond. They head back into division play next week after getting one last opportunity to see where they stand in the NJCAA South District.

"It's going to be the challenge we wanted out of Andrew but didn't necessarily get," Handy said. "It lets us know where we are. We can compare scores against the other Texas teams and give us an idea of how far we need to go."
