PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast hasn't trailed too many times in a dominant season, but Bulldogs coach Chris Handy wasn't worried at halftime Saturday in Perkinston.
His team turned that deficit into a 4-1 victory with four different players scoring in the final 45 minutes. Liam Eadsforth finished with a goal and two assists.
"I was more comfortable down 1-0 than we normally are up 3-0," Handy said. "Our issues were fixable. We were just missing a pass or two. We addressed those issues, and they paid off in the end."
The Bulldogs (13-1, 9-0 MACJC South) had already clinched the division title and will host the state tournament Oct. 29-30. They extended their winning streak to 12 games.
Southwest (11-5, 4-5) took the lead on Francisco Alisiardi's 41st minute goal.
"I thought we were playing well," Handy said. "We didn't defend well 1v1, but that's been a little bit of an issue all year with good players running at us."
Gulf Coast responded 10 minutes into the second half when Aarin Johnson (6-2, 290, Fr., The Cottesloe School/London) scored with an assist from Eadsforth (5-11, 145, Fr., The Radclyffe School/Manchester, England).
Nine minutes later, Eadsforth scored with help from Windham Whatley (5-8, 158, Fr., Florence/Florence) to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Tylor Davis (6-0, 164, Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport) added a third goal in the 77th minute with a beautiful, curling shot from outside the box that finished in the far upper 90.
Eadsforth assisted on a goal by James Beattie (5-7, 155, So., Williamwood/Glasgow, Scotland) five minutes later for the final margin.
