Coates’ 1-0 shutout earns MGCCC split

PERKINSTON — Emaleigh Coates scored the only Mississippi Gulf Coast run while she twirled a five-hitter Wednesday to beat Southwest Mississippi 1-0 at Ross-Smith Field. 

The Bulldogs had to settle for a split after falling 7-3 in the second game.

Coates (So., Lucedale/George County) walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and she advanced to third on a one-out single by Grace Allgood (So., Hurley/East Central). Abbott Stafford (So., Glenmora, La./Glenmora) blooped a single into left field for the winning run.

Coates stranded a two-out single in the seventh for the victory.

Darcy Novak (So., Hurley/East Central) was the only Bulldog with two hits in the first game.

Gulf Coast got behind 5-0 in the second game before Coates got an RBI single in the fifth. K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) drove in another run in the sixth to make it 5-2, but Southwest scored twice in the seventh.

Kristian Jones (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) homered to lead off the bottom of the inning, but the Bulldogs stranded two baserunners to lose. 

Gulf Coast is 20-21 overall, 12-10 MACCC. Southwest is 22-11, 9-11.

The Bulldogs play their final home doubleheader Saturday when Itawamba visits. First pitch is set for noon. The games will be streamed at https://livestream.com/mgcccbulldogs/events/10340862.
