Baseball comes up a run short vs. Pearl River

PERKINSTON---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College need a sweep of archrival Pearl River Saturday to clinch a spot in the post-season.

Despite a valiant effort and a 12-0 win in game one, the Bulldogs came up a game short as the Wildcats took the nightcap 10-9 in 10 innings.

Gulf Coast ends its season at 20-21 overall and 10-14 in the MACJC South Division. The Bulldogs will miss the post-season for the first time since 2010 despite going 5-2 in their last seven games.

The Bulldogs hammered the Wildcats 12-0 in the series opener behind a grand slam by Tyler Quave, a solo homer by Patrick McMahon, and a two-hit shutout performance by pitcher Cam Cochran that featured eight strikeouts. Garrett Odom had a three-run double while Quave, Richie Clark, James Land, D.Q. farmer, and Hunter Black all had two hits in the rout.

Game two featured eight lead changes and two homerun's from Pearl River's Kreg Garner. The Bulldog offense countered with a solo homerun from James Land that tied the game at 9 in the bottom of the seventh and sent it into extra innings. The Wildcats got the game-winning run in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly. Both teams loaded the bases in the ninth inning but couldn't score.

Land, Quave, and Clark all had two hits in the nightcap. Eight Gulf Coast pitchers worked in game two with Ryan Henry tallying four strikeouts in four innings of work.
