No. 1 Bulldogs in striking distance after 18

No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast battled challenging conditions Monday in the first round of the Jones College Invitational at Laurel Country Club.

The Bulldogs are in third place, three shots behind host Jones, after shooting 43-over at Laurel Country Club. Only six golfers shot below 80.

"It's hard to get a real measurement off of our play today," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "I didn't think we played as bad the score indicated, but obviously we could've made a few adjustments. Beyond that, it's hard to gauge based on the conditions and the weather on the golf course."

The teams will wrap up the fall MACCC schedule Tuesday with a final 18 holes. Monday's play got off to a delayed start because of frost.

Matthew Bond (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) shot 79 and is tied for third, with Paul Hoefer (Fr., Heidelberg, Germany/Kurpfalzgymnasium Mannheim) another three shots back tied for 12th.

"I think we'll be fine," Thornton said. "I think we're a little bit better expectation than that. We know what to expect, and I think we'll be prepared for it. I don't have any doubt my mind we'll take care of business."
