No. 1 Bulldogs lead by 12 after 18
No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast jumped right into the spring MACCC schedule with a solid first round in the Pearl River Invitational at Diamondhead Country Club. The Bulldogs lead No. 8 Meridian by 12 shots after 18 holes.
Paul Hoefer (Fr., Heidelberg, Germany/Kurpfalzgymnasium Mannheim) is tied for the lead at 2-under.
"That was probably one of the more consistent days that we've had all throughout the lineup," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "I don't think we scored as good as we could have, but we played really well as a team today. We had some good stretches, and we had some tougher stretches. That golf course can be very penal off the tee. There's out of bounds on every hole, so I think we did a good job of course management today and put ourselves in a good spot for tomorrow."
The 11 teams will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
Hoefer had five birdies and three bogies and is tied with East Central's Sam Arthur. Cal Wier is tied for fourth at 2-over, with Jayden Owensby (Fr., Hernando/Hernando) and Craig Bullock (Fr., Ripley /Ripley) at 3-over tied for sixth.
"Paul just kept the ball in play off the tee," Thornton said. "That's one of the tougher courses that we play all year, and he probably left a couple (shots) out there just like everybody else. But that's an exception around a golf out there, especially starting out the spring conference play."
Braeden Dobbs (Fr., Fulton/Itawamba AHS) and Noah Peters (Fr., London, England/Croxley Dane's School) played as individuals and are tied for 12th at 4-over.
