Lady Bulldogs try to get season going again

Mississippi Gulf Coast will make its second attempt to get the softball season underway starting Friday.

The Lady Bulldogs, ranked sixth in the NJCAA Division II poll, were rained out three innings into their first game at Faulkner State on Tuesday, leading 1-0 after Brittany Cooley's home run. They'll try again at the Wallace State Tournament in Hanceville, Ala.

They'll play six games, all of which are against Division I schools, two of which are ranked in the Top 12 of the NJCAA preseason poll. Another received votes in the poll.

"Early, it gives us an idea of how good we're going to be because we're playing all Division I teams," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "There's going to be some really, really tough games and put us in some spots where we need to be."

The Lady Bulldogs will face No. 8 Chattanooga State on Friday, and Navarro College, which received votes. Faulkner State and Southern Union wait Saturday, and San Jacinto College-South and No. 12 Wallace State round out the schedule Sunday.
