Ros Fabuel advances to finals

Mississippi Gulf Coast's Victoria Ros Fabuel will make history Wednesday, becoming the first Bulldog to play in a finals match at the national tournament.

The freshman from Valencia, Spain, won her No. 3 singles semifinals match at the NJCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship in Sumter, S.C. The No. 2 seed, she beat third-seeded Indira Wilson from Wallace State 6-1, 6-3.

"She's playing really well," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "She played a really good player from Wallace today. She took care of business from start to finish and was dominant. She played very offensive and just confident the entire time."

Gulf Coast is tied with Copiah-Lincoln for third with 31 points in the team standings. Jones leads with Wallace State in second.

Ros Fabuel will play Jones' Maria Martinez for the final point in the bracket Wednesday at 8 a.m. CT. Ros Fabuel won a three-setter against Martinez in the regular season.

The Bulldogs lost two other singles semifinals Tuesday, both against top seeds. Fifth-seeded Pia Pugliese (Fr., San Juan, Argentina/Colegio Central Universitario Mariano Moreno) fell to East Central's Shana Mao in No. 2 singles, and unseeded Andee Rogers (So., Wiggins/Stone) lost to Wallace State's Elizabeth Standifer.

The last doubles partnership alive for Gulf Coast also lost to a top seed. Fourth-seeded Pugliese and Paige Baronich (Fr., St. Martin/St. Martin) lost to Jones' Maria Martinez and Camila Piquin.

"It means a lot to be in this position. Obviously, we've never been in here before, having a girl in the finals of the national tournament. She definitely has earned it and deserves it. We're so excited for her and this opportunity, and she's excited for the opportunity to give the team one more point. I've got a lot of lotta belief in her."
