Arterberry, Johnson earn MACCC Player of the Week

PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast had two MACCC Players of the Week after its 45-24 semifinal win at East Mississippi.

Linebacker Kaleb Arterberry earned the defensive award, and defensive back La'Zeric Johnson earned the special teams version. MACCC sports information directors voted on the honors.

Arterberry, a freshman from Pearl, was all over the field at Scooba. He had 12 tackles, including a sack. He also broke up a pass.

Johnson, a freshman from Eight Mile, Ala., had a momentum-swinging play against the Lions. He blocked a field goal that would have cut the Bulldogs' lead to one point, which was returned to the EMCC 1. One play later, it was an 11-point lead. Johnson also had five tackles and a key fumble recovery, along with two pass breakups.

They are eligible for the NJCAA weekly awards. Arterberry and Johnson join kicker Aiden Guinn and quarterback Landon Varnes as Bulldogs who have won MACCC Player of the Week this season.
