PERKINSTON — No. 15 Mississippi Gulf Coast couldn't have asked for a better start to its MACJC schedule, blasting Northwest 7-0 in Thursday's opener and 13-2 in five innings in the second game.
"I think our players were excited to play conference games," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "It was a good atmosphere."
The Lady Bulldogs (9-5) haven't played a ton of games yet because of all the rain, but the hitters didn't show any signs of rust. Camryn Williams (So., White Hall/White Hall, Ark.) had a home run in the first game, and Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) hit two in the second. She's got seven after 14 games.
Kristen Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) was dominant in the first game, striking out 11 in her one-hitter. She improved to 5-2.
"She was really good," Long said. "I think she struck out six in the first three innings. She was really strong."
Williams, Katie Beth Williams (So., Smithville/Smithville) and Kaitlynn McGoey (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) had two hits in the opener. Archer went 2-for-4 in the second game and had four RBI.
Gulf Coast returns to action March 15 with a doubleheader with No. 19 Highland that's just been added to the schedule. It will start at noon in Perkinston.
