PERKINSTON — No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast got two more stellar pitching performances and three long balls Friday to sweep No. 11 Northeast Mississippi at Ross-Smith Field.
Kristen Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) struck out 11 on the way to a 5-1 win in the opener, with Kayla Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) and Camryn Williams (So., White Hall/White Hall, Ark.) hitting home runs. Betty Mingo (So., Choctaw Central/Philadelphia) provided all the offense Avery Sanders (So., Edward Douglas/Thibodaux, La.) needed in the second game, as she struck out seven without a walk in a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs (21-9, 13-3 MACJC) surged past the Lady Tigers (25-9, 10-4) into third place in the MACJC. They'll play a pair of road MACJC doubleheaders next week sandwiched around a trip to No. 2 LSU Eunice. Gulf Coast plays at Hinds on Monday, in Louisiana on Thursday and at Mississippi Delta on Friday.
Mya Hopson (So., Madison Central/Madison) had a first-inning RBI single in the opener for a quick lead. Kayla Cade's two-run homer came in the second, and it was 4-0 after three following a Northeast error.
Williams homered in the fifth for the final Bulldogs run, and Northeast managed only a seventh-inning run against Cade (11-2).
Mingo's home run came in the first inning of the second game, and it was all that Sanders needed. She pitched a masterful three-hitter for her second straight complete game, improving to 6-2.
