Hickam signs with UTC

PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast golfer Phillip Hickam signed a scholarship Thursday to play at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Gulf Coast golf coach Tommy Snell said Hickam, a sophomore from Olive Branch, drives the ball well, and hits his approach shots well. He predicts hard work around the green this fall will translate into a big spring.

"He's a hard worker, and he's a very talented player," Snell said. "When you combine those two, you're going to be a successful player. He's taking care of business in the classroom, on track to be Academic All-American."

Hickam finished second in the NJCAA Division II National Championship last year, earning NJCAA First-Team All-American honors. He helped lead the Bulldogs to the MACJC and Region 23 championships, earning All-MACJC honors.

It was the school's eighth straight region title.

Hickam was also named to the NJCAA Division II PING All-Central Region Team.
