MGCCC’s Grant Motter signs with Mississippi State

PERKINSTON – Highly decorated Mississippi Gulf Coast golfer Grant Motter has signed a scholarship to continue his playing career at Mississippi State University.

Motter, from Oak Grove, has led the Bulldogs to MACJC and NJCAA Region 23 championships in each of his two seasons in Perkinston. He finished second in last year's NJCAA Division II National Tournament, leading Gulf Coast to its second straight third-place finish.

"He's a player that's going to be hard to replace," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "He's been a great player for us for two years. He's always right there in the hunt. If he's not winning, he's in the top five. We're going to miss him. He's been an integral part of our team."

He and his teammates will try to win the school's first golf national championship later this month. The tournament will be played May 24-27 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Motter, who won eight tournaments and finished second another five times, has been the state tournament medalist the last two seasons. He's been All-MACJC and All-Region First Team. In 2015, he won the Hubert Tucker Award, given to the golfer with the lowest average in MACJC events.

In 2015 He was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America NJCAA Division II PING All-American First Team and won a spot on the All-Nicklaus Team. He was named a finalist for the 2016 NJCAA Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, which will be named June 2 at Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament at Muirfield.

"Grant has proven himself to be one of the top players in the junior college ranks," Mississippi State coach Clay Homan said. "He is a confident player who will give our team a boost in the top of the lineup."
