Blake, Wilkinson made All-Tourney Team
No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast was in position to stage a big comeback in the final round of the GlenLakes Invitational on Tuesday, but the Bulldogs wound up in third place in a tough field in Foley, Ala.
"We kind of stumbled on our way in," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We figured out we played the last three holes 10-over."
The Bulldogs' Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) and Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Blake shot even par and Wilkinson 1-over to make the All-Tournament Team, and Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) finished ninth at 4-over.
Central Alabama, which is ranked seventh in NJCAA Division I by Golfstat, finished 12-over to win the tournament. Meridian, ranked fourth in Division II, was one shot back.
Gulf Coast finished plus-23, 10 ahead of No. 8 (D-I) Wallace State.
The Bulldogs made the turn at 5-under but had two triple bogeys and a double bogey on the last three holes.
"They played well up until then. We were right there," Snell said. "It was like the first round; you have to stay away from those big numbers. We're on the verge of playing well."
GlenLakes Golf Club will be the site of the NJCAA Division II National Championship on May 21-24. The Bulldogs played another event there in the fall, trying to get ready for the season finale.
"Every time you play that course, you learn something about it, some little nuance, that allows you to attack a hole or play it differently," Snell said. "Now the wind might be different at nationals, or the turf might react differently, but the more you play the course the better feel you have."
