3 MGCCC golfers named Nicklaus Award semifinalists

PERKINSTON — Three Mississippi Gulf Coast golfers have been named Jack Nicklaus National NJCAA Player of the Year Award semifinals: Jackson Wedgeworth, Brice Wilkinson and Colby Blake.

The award, presented by Barbasol, earns the winner a shot at winning an exemption into a PGA Tour event. Finalists will be announced May 14, with the winner being presented their award by Nicklaus at a ceremony during the final round of the PGA Tour's Barbasol Championship in Lexington, Ky., on May 31.

Wedgeworth, a sophomore from West Jones, won the Hubert Tucker Award for having the lowest scoring average in MACJC play. He won one tournament and had five top-five finishes this year.

Wilkinson, a freshman from Madison Central, won medalist at the NJCAA District D Championship by five shots. He also had five other top-five finishes and has made the All-Tournament team in his last three outings.

Blake, a sophomore from Tylertown, had three top-five finishes and tied for third at the District D Championship.

The winners from NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA; and NJCAA will compete in the Barbasol Shootout on June 2 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Scioto is the course where Nicklaus learned to play golf as a young boy.
