No. 2 MGCCC finishes 2nd at MACJC Tourney

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast finished second at the MACJC Championship, which ended Friday at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course in Philadelphia.

The Bulldogs were 12 shots back of Meridian, and Gulf Coast's Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) finished at 1-under in second place among individuals.

"We didn't play well, but we can't play well every tournament," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "They're a good team, and you can't beat them when you play your C-game. Hats off to them. We had a good round yesterday, but just couldn't follow it up today."

Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) shot 3-over to finish in fourth. Carter Nicholson (Fr., Pearl River Central/Carriere) was ninth, Colby Blake was 10th and Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian) was 11th.

Wedgeworth won the Hubert Tucker Award for the player with the lowest scoring average. He averaged 70.70 in the championship and four regular-season events, where he made the All-Tournament Team in all of them. He was medalist once.

"It's pretty awesome with the field I was playing against this year," Wedgeworth said. "I knew it was going to be tough coming into it, but I'm just really excited I got to win that award."

Wedgeworth and Wilkinson made the All-MACJC First Team, which comprised the top six golfers in the state for the entire year. Blake and Entriken made the Second Team.

Meridian, Gulf Coast, Copiah-Lincoln and East Central qualified to advance to the NJCAA District D Championship in two weeks at Lion Hills Country Club in Columbus. East Mississippi, that tournament's host, has an automatic berth in the field.
