Breyona Tanner and Kate Grehan blanked Mississippi Gulf Coast's first two opponents in the Coyote Classic on Monday, and the Bulldogs sprinted through the first day in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Gulf Coast beat Bishop State 6-0 and needed five innings to top Reid State 8-0.
"They worked ahead in the count well today," Bulldogs coach Izzy Werdann said. "Everything that we've been working on is, even when we give up a hit to respond back with an out. The defense and our pitching did a good job of backing it up with an out."
Baleigh Tullos (So., Hurley/East Central) led the onslaught at the plate, driving in four runs during a 4-for-6 day.
Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) improved to 2-1 with a two-hitter in the opener, striking out three while walking one.
Tullos went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Caroline Batson (So., Wiggins/Stone) had two hits and drove in three.
"She was able to figure out and get on time with a lot of different pitchers we saw today," Werdann said. "Every time she was able to make a really quick adjustment and hit the back of a ball. Anytime you can get Baleigh on base, she runs the bases very well. She's a great piece of our offense."
Bishop State is 3-9 after having beaten Holmes 4-3 in its first game.
Grehan (So., Hernando/Magnolia Heights) gave up four hits in the second game, striking out five without a walk.
Kailee Lawson (Fr., Hurley/East Central) went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Brooklyn Mitchell (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) and Lexi Patterson (Fr., Ackerman/Choctaw County) doubled and had RBIs.
Reid State is 2-14 after losing to Northwest-Shoals earlier in the day.
The Bulldogs are 7-2 heading into the second day of the tournament, hosted by Coastal Alabama-South. They close out play Saturday with two more games. The Bulldogs play Motlow State at 1:30 p.m. and close things out against Lamar State-Port Arthur at 6.
