Bulldogs close out season with sweep

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast ended the 2026 season a positive note with a sweep of East Mississippi at Ross-Smith Field.

Two Bulldog pitchers allowed a total of nine hits over the two games, 7-1 and 8-1 wins over the Lions.

"We played very well," Gulf Coast coach Izzy Werdann said. "We swung the bats well, we pitched well, and then we played great defense."

Baleigh Tullos (So., Hurley/East Central) provided the big hit in a four-run first to open the afternoon for Gulf Coast with a two-run double.

Breyona Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) was strong for the Bulldogs, scattering five hits and walking just one.

After East Mississippi finally got on the board in the sixth, the Bulldogs answered immediately with three of their own. Kinsey Cochran (So., Hurley/East Central) beat out a bunt RBI single, and two more scored on an error and a sacrifice bunt.

Tullos and Cochran had two hits each, and Brooklyn Mitchell (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) drove in two.

McKenzie Smith (Fr., St. Amant, La./Prairieville) struck out nine in her four-hitter Game 2 victory. She also walked just one.

Leading 3-1 in the fifth, the Bulldogs put the game away with five runs. Kailee Lawson's single to left scored a run, and Brooklynn Peterson (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) followed with a sacrifice fly. Kevionna Myers (Fr., Bassfield/Jefferson Davis) came up next and roped a three-run homer over the left field wall.

Natalie Jones (So., Lucedale/George County) had two doubles, and Jones had two hits. Mitchell, Peterson and Lawson also doubled.

EMCC ended its season 12-32, 4-24.

The Bulldogs finished 27-22 overall and 11-17 in the MACCC.

"I've grown with them," Werdann said. "They taught me a lot. There's a lot of growing in your first year as a head coach, and they allowed me and helped me to grow through those things and taught me a lot of other things."
