Softball loses twice to No. 4 Co-Lin

PERKINSTON — Gulf Coast led in both games of a doubleheader but couldn't hold on, dropping a pair to No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln at Ross-Smith Field.

Co-Lin won the opener 5-2 and closed out the day with an 11-3 win in six innings. 

In the opener, Gulf Coast scored twice in the fifth to go up 2-1. Caroline Batson (So., Wiggins/Stone) led off the inning with the Bulldogs' first hit, and Piper Rushing (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) reached on a one-out single.

Kailee Lawson (Fr., Hurley/East Central) cued a fly ball into the outfield that spun away from the right fielder, allowing two runs to score.

Co-Lin scored four times in the sixth to claim the win.

In the nightcap, Gulf Coast answered a run in the top of the first with two to take a lead again. Brooklyn Mitchell (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) hit a ground ball that was thrown into the outfield, tying the game. Lexi Patterson (Fr., Ackerman/Choctaw County) followed with an RBI groundout.

The Wolves scored twice in the third to regain the lead, then pulled away. 

Baleigh Tullos (So., Hurley/East Central) hit a solo homer for Gulf Coast.

The Bulldogs are 23-20 overall, 9-15 MACCC. Co-Lin is 38-5, 19-3.

Gulf Coast will celebrate Sophomore Day on Saturday. Ceremonies will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Ross-Smith Field, with first pitch in the Baton Rouge doubleheader set for 3. The games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
