Bulldogs lose to PRCC in 4

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast dug too big a hole to climb out of Monday in the first 21st-century volleyball showdown against Pearl River, losing in four sets

The Bulldogs were down big in the second set but got some momentum toward the end and rallied for a third-set win. It wasn't enough, as the Wildcats won 26-24, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20.

Gulf Coast trailed 21-8 in the second but closed the gap by winning five of six points late.

The third set was nip-and-tuck until the Bulldogs started getting Malorie Gaughf (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) into the offense. She had three kills to help get from a 10-9 deficit to a 19-17 lead. Then, she teamed with Reese Sorrells (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) and Mariah Hammond (Fr., Slidell La./Northshore) for two blocks for a 21-19 lead, and Alexa Shinabery (Fr., Marion Ark./Marion)'s ace made it a three-point advantage and Gulf Coast closed it out from there.

Gulf Coast (5-2, 0-2 MACCC) had trouble receiving serve in the final set, and Pearl River (7-2, 2-0) was able to score 16 of 19 points to take charge.

Sydney Tague (Fr., Olive Branch/DeSoto Central) had 16 assists, Cambell Herrington (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) had 16 digs, and Lila Turner (Fr., Kiln/Hancock) had 11 assists.

The Bulldogs travel to Northeast Mississippi on Wednesday. First serve is set for 5 p.m. in Booneville.
